What is a Blue Flag Beach?

A Blue Flag beach is a designation given to beaches that meet certain cleanliness, safety, and environmental management criteria. The Blue Flag program is an international eco-label awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). Beaches can apply to the Blue Flag program and, if they meet the criteria, they are granted the Blue Flag status.

How to Gain a Blue Flag Status

To gain a Blue Flag status, beaches must meet a set of strict criteria. These criteria include:

  • Water quality: The beach must have excellent water quality, with regular testing to ensure it is safe for swimming.

  • Environmental management: The beach must have measures in place to protect the local environment, such as waste management systems and the promotion of environmental education.

  • Safety and services: The beach must have lifeguards on duty, proper signage, and facilities such as toilets and waste bins.

  • Social responsibility: The beach must be accessible to all, with measures in place to accommodate people with disabilities.

Once a beach meets these criteria, it can apply to the Blue Flag program. If approved, the beach is awarded the Blue Flag status and can proudly display the Blue Flag symbol.
